UP AND COMING – PS3 JRPGs and a Unique Square Enix Title

UP AND COMING – PS3 JRPGs and a Unique Square Enix Title

If you’ve ever played a Disgaea game or one of its many iterations (Phantom Brave, Makai Kingdom, etc), then you know who NIS is.   The developer is looking to release new PS3 titles that will the West later this year.  This includes Disgaea Dimensions 2: A Brighter Darkness, which is an actual sequel to the very first Disgaea (with Laharl, Etna, and Flonne as the main characters).  The others are Time and Eternity and The Guided Fate Paradox (you gotta love these JRPG titles when they’re translated into English).  You can read more in the IGN article – Introducing Three New Playstation 3 – Exclusive JRPGs.

Square Enix is also working on a new project – Murdered: Soul Suspect.  This isn’t set for release until 2014, but its currently slated for current gen systems (PS3 and Xbox 360).  The premise is intriguing – catching your own murderer – but details on gameplay aren’t yet available.  Check out IGN’s article on the developing title – Square Enix’s Murdered: Soul Suspect Coming in 2014.

More PS4 Info – Backwards Compatibility and Games List

So, bad news first.  PS4 will NOT be backwards compatible with PS3 retail or downloaded games.  Sorry guys – looks like this is the trend with new systems, so you’ll have to hold on to your last gen console for the time being.  As I’m still working on several PS3 games, I’m more than likely going to have my PS4 setup right next to its older counterpart.  Also, the DualShock 3 controllers you use with your PS3 will not be supported by the PS4 (although the PlayStation Move will be).  This isn’t surprising, but its not exactly good news either.

On a brighter note, a list of upcoming PS4 titles have been revealed.  See the full story on IGN – PlayStation 4 Games.  I’m personally stoked about a console Diablo 3, and I’m cautiously watching the new Final Fantasy.  I might consider Infamous, as well.  I’m sure the list will grow as the months go by, but this isn’t a bad teaser!

Playstation Event - PS4 Reveal

PLAYSTATION EVENT – PS4 REVEAL

So, in case you missed it (like me, who was at work, boo…), here are the main points you need to take away from today’s big Playstation event.

1. Playstation 4 will be arriving this year around the holidays!  Woohoo!  Just in time for a Christmas present to myself!

2. They’re introducing a new controller.  It’ll have an updated design and lots of new features.  Its still going to be called the DualShock, but the DualShock 4.  Read IGN's article here - What's New with Sony's DualShock 4?

3. PS4 will allow players to stream game and interact in various ways with other gamers via the PlayStation Cloud service, which is powered by Gaikai.  Remember back in the olden days when GameStop allowed you to try games in the store before you bought them?  Just imagine that but cooler because you’re sitting on the couch with your buddies in your underwear.  Read more here - Gaikai Integrated with PlayStation 4

4. PS4 is getting even more powerful with exciting new features.  Read all the specific revelations in IGN’s article – Playstation 4 Revealed.  To sum it up – it’s going to be awesome!

NOW PLAYING - Ni No Kuni (Post Game)

NOW PLAYING – Ni No Kuni (Post Game)

I admit it.  I’m a bit overleveled.  When I finally took on the last boss, most of my familiars were max level, and Oliver, Esther, and Swaine were all in their high 90s.  The allure of hunting down Tokotokos was just too much to resist.  Aside from the relative lack of challenge presented by the game’s final moments, I was still extremely satisfied with the outcome.  I’ll avoid spoiling anything specific about the ending here, but lets just say the atmosphere and feeling is pretty typical of a Studio Ghibli film.

You can see my assortment of favorite characters in this picture.  Note that the Sapdragon is only available post game.

Once the credits are done rolling, you can save your game as a “Completed” file, which unlocks all the post game content, including new tasks and bounty hunts, additional prizes in the Casino, Rank S in the Solosseum, and the game’s hidden ultimate boss.  I’ve spent a good amount of time powering up and feeding my familiars, so I’m not too intimidated by any of the challenges, but I’m still looking forward to taking them on.

Sure, I’m a little bummed that my time with Ni No Kuni is coming to a close, but its been one of the best gaming rides I’ve ever been on.  Looking back, here are some of my favorite moments in the game (in no particular order).

SPOILERS BELOW!!

  • Recruiting Tengri and being able to fly all over the world
  • Going back to open the Purple Chests after powering up Mornstar
  • Rescuing the Lilties from inside Mr. Drippy’s Mam
  • Hunting Tokotoko’s on Billy Goat’s Bluff and FINALLY catching one
  • Completing the Dual Pathway challenge in the Temple of Trials
  • Discovering the true identities of Shadar and the White Witch
  • Taking on the “evil” versions of King Tom and The Cowlipha
  • Stealing Crownberries from the familiars on the island of Nazcaa to make the best treats for my familiars
  • Listening to Swaine and Esther constantly bickering in cut scenes throughout the game
  • Stealing with Swaine in general (I love thieves)
  • Learning the Mornstar and Evenstar spells
  • Learning that the people in Motorville and the “Other World” are connected
  • Using Veil to sneak up on enemies for surprise attacks
  • Defeating the White Witch and the unexpected final boss that followed
  • Watching my boyfriend enjoy the game just as much as I did (or maybe even more so)

END SPOILERS…

I’m still working on the last few tasks available, but I have a feeling that somewhere down the road I’m going to pick this game back up for a replay.  Thanks for a great time, Level-5!

Skyrim Hearthfire DLC Available for PS3 Today

SKYRIM HEARTHFIRE DLC AVAILABLE FOR PS3 TODAY

I’m back from my hiatus and on a great day, too!  For one, the Skyrim Hearthfire DLC is now available for download on the PS3 (2/19).  I truthfully don’t know much about the expansion, but being able to build your own home with customizable features does sound pretty awesome.

And secondly, tomorrow is the big Sony event!  Because I’m stuck all the way in the Hawaii timezone, I’m going to miss it while at work, but rest assured I’ll have something to say about it once I catch up on the events of the day!

Have an awesome week, folks!  I’ll be back doing regular updates and original content this week.
