TO BUY OR NOT TO BUY - Nintendo Wii U

TO BUY OR NOT TO BUY – Nintendo Wii U

The Wii U has been out for a little while now, but I haven’t had the usual overwhelming urge to buy the new system.  There are a few good reasons for that, though.

One, the game line-up isn’t all that impressive right now.  The only one
that somewhat intrigues me is New Super Mario Bros. U, but it looks just like another iteration of the New Super Mario Bros. Wii.  Nothing else has really caught my eye.  Nintendo traditionally has at least one or two golden launch titles, but not so this time, at least in my opinion.  The core franchises are nowhere to be found.  I would’ve been happy if they kept with tradition and launched a new Mario platformer (like Mario 64 or Galaxy) but that just didn’t happen this time.

Should I or shouldn't I?

The price point is also a little daunting.  While $299 may not be too bad for a next generation console, its hard to justify the price without a strong game library behind it.  The new controller seems to be cool, but I’ve heard so far that developers haven’t been using it all that creatively.  Being able to take your game with you and play it on the move (without your TV) does seem pretty cool, though.

Do any of you own a Wii U?  How has your experience been with it so far?  At this point, I think it’ll take a major release like Legend of Zelda or Super Mario to get me to buy one.  For now, I think I’ll watch and wait.

NOW PLAYING - Star Ocean Last Hope International

NOW PLAYING – Star Ocean Last Hope International

With all the excitement over Ni No Kuni, I wanted to write about my experience with another great JRPG – Star Ocean Last Hope International, a non-Final Fantasy offering from Square-Enix.  Although it was released back in 2010, I only recently picked it up when I saw it for a good price at GameStop.

I’m currently on my second playthrough, and I’m still thoroughly enjoying every minute of it.  The first time, I was entranced by the storyline.  Although a bit generic, the premise of taking off into space and discovering new worlds hooked me pretty quickly.  And while the evil force behind the scenes has a pretty standard villainous desire, the specifics behind it are intriguing. The main characters have a good amount of depth and the interactions between them are both entertaining and poignant.

The cast of Star Ocean Last Hope.

Thankfully, if you played the game before, you can skip through the sometimes lengthy cut scenes and get right to the action.  The real-time battle system is well designed and uses some interesting mechanics.  Blindsiding is probably one of the most unique features, allowing you to dash behind your enemy and attack for critical damage.  Chain combos – the execution of multiple characters’ special techniques – are awesome to behold and extremely damaging.  The Bonus Board – a meter of sorts that is filled by performing different feats in battle – provides bonuses when you conquer your foes in the form of extra experience, Fol (the money of Star Ocean), SP (used to build up your characters’ skills), or partial restoration of HP and MP.

Little girl Lymle can kick some major butt!

Each character has their own weapon types, special techniques, symbols (i.e. magic spells), and field skills (things like Harvesting and Mining that allow you to access different resource points, or Crafting and Alchemy that assist in Item Creation), giving each one a pretty unique playstyle and role.

The game itself is pretty lengthy, and there’s a lot to see and do.  Item Creation gives you access to additional items and equipment for your party, granted you “invent” the proper recipes and have the right materials.  Synthesis gives you more customization options, allowing you to fuse materials to your weapons and armor to make them stronger and grant additional abilities.  An extensive Collection is available that keeps track of all kinds of game data. Particularly important is your monster data, which you can actually use to create unique artifacts from Monster Gems.

There are a few secrets to be found too, including special endings for each character that may or may not appear depending on your choices throughout the game, and hidden dungeons and bosses that only appear on your second playthrough (hence why I’m going through it again).  There are even difficulty levels that can be selected when starting a new file for those who want more of a challenge throughout the experience.

As for as JRPGs go, Star Ocean’s overall structure is pretty familiar, but the well designed battle system and long list of things to do has kept me coming back for more.  My one complaint?  Like many classic JRPGs, saving can only be done at specific save points, and this game does a particularly poor job at placement, sometimes forcing you to play through segments that may take hours until you get to the next one.  And yes, I’ve been about an hour into a dungeon when my game froze.  On several occasions.  GRRR…

Ominous, isn't it?

Other than that, if you love JRPGs, be sure to check out Star Ocean.  Have you played this great game, too?  What’s most memorable to you about it?

It's TRASH DAY - Final Fantasy All the Bravest

It’s TRASH DAY – Final Fantasy All the Bravest

I normally don’t poke my nose in mobile circles, but when I got a whiff of this monstrosity, I just had to get the word out.  I personally despise games created as quick cash-ins.  This includes those awful games based on movies and TV shows, and those abominations that entice players to keep paying more of our valuable dollars to unlock “premium” content.

Square-Enix (formally Squaresoft) is known mostly for fairly good titles, but if you’ve been following the company for as long as I have, you know the quality of their products has faltered from their original glory.  Sure, Lightning Returns sounds like a respectable title, but I miss the good old days of Final Fantasy VI, VII, and Tactics, Crono Trigger, and Secret of Mana.

If Square-Enix is trying so hard to hold on to their dwindling older and more loyal fan base, why would they create a piece of trash like Final Fantasy All the Bravest?  Sure it’s a mobile game, and mobile games tend to be simpler in nature, but this is just a joke!  No gameplay, no story, and no value whatsoever!  IGN wrote a fittingly scathing review and rated this pile of puke 2.5 out of 10.  See the review here.

Don't be fooled by how cool this looks!

Square!  Start making good games again!  Give us a reimagined Final Fantasy, a sequel to the Chrono series, or even a follow up to Chocobo’s Dungeon (which I loved because Chocobos are just such little darlings).  Don’t make these quick cash-ins, and don’t INSULT us by trying to use “nostalgia” to lure us in to pay more money for what is essentially worthless rubbish.

How could you not love these big yellow birds?

I’m still a huge follower, but this has sullied my image of you.  You had it in you before.  You have tremendous brand power and name recognition.  Make your fans happy, Square-Enix!

Skyrim DLC Coming to PS3!

Skyrim DLC Coming to PS3!

FINALLY.  If you were like me and invested over 200 hours into your Skyrim characters on your PS3, you were probably just as devastated upon hearing the news that the DLC released for the XBOX 360 may NEVER come to the PS3.  I couldn’t believe it at first.  I was so excited to follow the vampire storyline in Dawnguard when I realized the XBOX 360 was enjoying the expansion as exclusive content.  While I also own an XBOX 360, all my time was invested into the PS3 version.  Thus, my interest in Skyrim at that point quickly waned.

But now, after months of waiting and speculation, Bethesda announced that ALL DLC – Dawnguard, Hearthfire, and Dragonborn – will be released for the PS3 in February of this year!  As an added bonus (and an “apology”), the expansions will be priced at 50% off during the first week of release.  There are no exact dates yet for each release, but you can be sure I’ll let you all know when I find out!

Finally coming to the PS3!
Are you excited to finally get your hands on this DLC, fellow Skyrim PS3 owners?  Will it get you playing Skyrim again?  I think I’ll dust off my copy, at least in between sessions of Ni No Kuni.

Ni No Kuni is Almost Here!

Ni No Kuni is Almost Here!

If you’ve ever watched a Miyazaki film, you’ve experienced the vibrant colors, lovable characters, beautiful animation, enchanting music, and rich stories presented in his works.  My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke, Howl’s Moving Castle, and Spirited Away (my personal favorite) are just a few samples of his marvelous films.  Imagine my delight when I heard a video game was being produced through his artistic direction.  And imagine my further delight when I learned that Level-5, the developer behind my beloved Dark Cloud series – would play a part!  Now the wait is nearly over, with the release date around the corner on 1/22/13.

Doesn't this look wonderful?  Photo courtesy of IGN.

IGN has already written a fantastic and glowing review, giving a whopping 9.4 out of 10.  Read the full review here.

Are you excited for Ni No Kuni, too?  Even if you’ve never seen a Miyazaki film (shame on you), this would be a great first experience with his work.
